My thoughts: Friend dog by Robert Wahl features a precocious toddler whose mother has just brought home a puppy.
This is a very simple book with colorful illustrations told in rhyme about the day of the young child and the puppy. They play together, share treats together, have a bath and eventually sleep. Not an especially earth shattering story, but sweet nonetheless.
I’m sharing it with you because it resonated strongly with the baby (who is now 18 months old). We’ve read this a number of times since borrowing it from the library. He is thoroughly engaged with the story, listening to the rhymes, touching the pages and upon finishing the story he looks up at me and says quite simply “Again.”
I’m sure this is the first of many books that I will read on a never ending loop to him, but that doesn’t make it any less sweet.
Friend Dog is an excellent introduction to picture books for the younger child and will easily help build a foundation for a passion for reading.
